Short answer: Add up what one round-trip trade costs you: the average spread in pips × $10 per standard lot on EUR/USD, plus the round-turn commission. That’s the all-in cost per lot. Then check the swap if you hold overnight, and any account fees.
The formula we use
All-in cost per lot = (average EUR/USD spread in pips × $10) + round-turn commission
| Account | Average spread | Commission (round turn) | All-in cost per lot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical Standard account | 1.2 pips | $0 | $12 |
| Typical raw account | 0.1 pips | $6 | $7 |
| Expensive Standard account | 1.8 pips | $0 | $18 |
Watch the commission wording
Some brokers quote commission per side ($3.50 per lot per side), others per round turn ($7). Per side means you pay it twice, once to open and once to close. Always convert to round turn before comparing.
Costs outside the all-in figure
- Swaps if you hold positions overnight
- Currency conversion if your account currency differs from what you trade
- Withdrawal and inactivity fees. See hidden fees.
